Short History

The first “Pirin” football team was founded in 1922 while football in the district has been practiced since 1918. For its almost 100-year history, “Pirin” has managed to become one of the main training and developing centers for football players in Bulgaria, gathering and nurturing the football potential of one of the largest regions of the country.

The name of the football club was adopted from “Pirin”, a mountain range in southwestern Bulgaria. The club’s home ground is the “Hristo Botev” Stadium in Blagoevgrad with a capacity of 7,000 spectators. Pirin’s nickname is “Orletata” (the eaglets) and their kit colors are green and white.

FC Pirin is a long-time participant in Bulgarian professional football, has four domestic cup finals, has played 28 seasons in the top flight and has competed twice in the European football competitions with participation in the UEFA Cup and in the Cup Winners’ Cup respectively. This season the team competes in the Second League, the second division of Bulgarian football.

For almost a hundred-years of history, FC “Pirin” has never stood still and now keeps moving forward. Great changes that have taken place recently have had a huge impact on the further development of the club. New players, new staff, the active work on the Youth Academy – the club is ready to achieve new football greatness.

Talented Youth

There are dozens of players struggling every day to become a part of leading Bulgarian football clubs. And it is a great pleasure to admit that graduates of Pirin Academy have always been leaders in this serious competition.

Among the most famous and talented Bulgarian footballers who were produced by the Academy are the 1994 FIFA World Cup bronze medalists Petar Mihtarski and Ivaylo Andonov, former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov, who won two Premier League titles and was the 2010-11 Premier League top goalscorer. Among other successful alumnus are Spas Delev, Ivan Cvetkov, Vladislav Zlatinov, Nikolay Bodurov, Nikolay Petrunov, Petar Zanev, Dobromir Mitov, Ivo Trenchev and many others.

These days, the best indicator of hard work and talented guidance of Pirin club’s Academy are the numerous examples and the constant availability of talented football players who play for the best Bulgarian and European football clubs.

It makes us really proud that Pirin’s Academy is attributed as being one of the best developers of young players in Bulgaria, called the “cradle”.
